As the anniversary of the 25 June 2024 protests approaches, tensions are once again building across Kenya’s civil space. This date marks one year since youth-led demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024/2025 escalated into violence, culminating in the breach of Parliament and the fatal shooting of several protesters.
In remembrance of those killed, victims’ families and human rights organisations have requested to hold a peaceful procession in Nairobi, including a flower-laying ceremony outside Parliament, on the site where many of the casualties occurred.
Yet, despite the peaceful intent, current indicators suggest a heightened likelihood of mass participation and potential unrest. An increase in both online and grassroots mobilisation, combined with public anger over recent extrajudicial killings, indicates that the event could escalate, particularly in Nairobi’s central business district.
