The Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is now the world’s second-largest Ebola outbreak on record, after the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic.
As of 10 August 2026, the DRC had recorded 4,294 confirmed cases, including 1,960 deaths and 849 recoveries. Cases now span five provinces, with Ituri remaining the epicentre. Uganda has unilaterally declared the outbreak over, having recorded 20 confirmed cases, including two deaths, while a single case reported in France has recovered with no local transmission identified.
Attention also remains focused on the potential for further geographic spread. In the DRC, concerns were raised following the interception of a boat outside Kinshasa on 05 August after a passenger who had disembarked earlier in the journey died with symptoms consistent with Ebola. As of Castor Vali’s 10 August report, no cases had been confirmed in the capital, and the boat was cleared with no positive cases detected.
The outbreak is also affecting regional and international movement. The Uganda-DRC border remains closed to passenger traffic, while enhanced screening, quarantine measures and travel restrictions have been introduced by countries within the region and further afield.
